Stephanie Shostak – You Can Play Ambassador / President Alberta Volleyball Officials Association
Mike Bell – Calgary Inclusive Hockey Association
You Can Play seeks to challenge the culture of the locker room’s and spectator areas by focusing only on an athlete’s skills, work ethic and competitive spirit. YCP works to guarantee that athletes are given a fair opportunity to compete, judged by other athletes and fans alike, only by what they contribute to the sport or their team’s success. At YCP, we assume that sport organizations want members of their athletic community to feel respected, included, valued and supported. To do this, it takes the proper tools and guidelines to insure teams can become more inclusive and as a result, more successful.
This panel is going to discuss those tools and guidelines while exploring the importance of implementing these within sporting organizations. We will also address the impact this will have regarding the challenges still being faced by LGTBQ athletes, coaches, referees and fans in today’s sports community
In this session, Dr. Tom Hinch will highlight the synergistic relationship between the two global phenomena of sport and tourism. The advantages of sport as a tourist attraction are then discussed along with a typology of sport tourism that that can be used to formulate strategic plans.
The session will then close by identifying resources that you can use to capitalize on the opportunities that sport tourism provides to your organizations and communities.
